Carmen The Spanish heat and gypsy passion of Carmen take to the stage as The Royal Opera presents this great core masterpiece in a production new in 2007. Francesca Zambello’s vibrant direction with Tanya McCallin’s richly coloured designs create the sun-drenched and sultry world of 19th-century Spain. Anna Caterina Antonacci plays the fickle temptress of the title with heart-throb German tenor Jonas Kaufmann as Don José, the soldier she forces to murderous jealousy over her affair with the bullfighter Escamillo. This outstanding cast, under the baton of Royal Opera Music Director, Antonio Pappano, play out this famous story with its sexy solos, rousing choruses, impassioned arias and Spanish dances of one of the most famously tuneful of all operas.

Swan Lake is the classic story of love and betrayal. Prince Siegfried falls in love with the Swan Queen, Odette, condemned through the evil magic of magician Von Rothbart to transform into a swan by day. After trickery at a palace ball prevents the Prince marrying his new love and restoring her to her true form, tragedy is the only means left to him finally to break the spell. The ethereal forms of the swans, illuminated by moonlight, the charged solos for the Prince and Odette and her alter-ego Odile, the machinations of Von Rothbart and the colour of a palace ball – all combine with Tchaikovsky’s glorious music to make for a production of inspiration and romance. Starring Marianela Nuñez as Odette/Odile and Thiago Soares as Prince Siegfried.

La bohème by Puccini is one of the most famously melodious and eternally popular of all operas. The carefree attitude of youth and the harsh realities of life are poignantly contrasted through the tender affair of Mimì and Rodolfo, from the heights of their first meeting through to its tragic end. Starring Teodor Ilincai as Rodolfo and Hibla Gerzmava as Mimì.
